For many children in Iraq, education can seem like an unattainable luxury.
The state of education in Iraq
A United Nations report states that more than 2.5 million school-aged children cannot access education due to the following reasons:
A new report published by the Norwegian Council for the Displaced in March 2024 states that 5.2 million Iraqi children are being denied access to education, with 770,000 displaced children living in sub-standard conditions without proper schooling.
Such statistics make a dire need for proper schooling clear.
Al-Ayn believes every child deserves access to quality education regardless of their circumstances. Education equips children to grow up and become working professionals. If they earn an income, they are less reliant on aid and positively contribute to the economy.
And for this reason, we have developed a comprehensive education and vocational training program.
Al-Ayn’s educational support
Our education projects are not restricted to conventional teaching. The orphaned children in our care have witnessed horrors that we wouldn’t face in a lifetime–and that too at such a young and tender age.
As a result, our program blends academic learning with emotional and social support, helping children overcome barriers that may prevent them from learning and developing.
Every child in our care receives:
These essentials ensure that children are well-prepared to learn and have the appetite to engage in lessons on a daily basis. We know most children will need support beyond school supplies.
Recognizing this need, we provide free tuition to support children who struggle with specific subjects. Our qualified volunteers and staff provide one-to-one tutoring, tailoring their teaching methods to each child’s learning style. The personalized support and guidance give each student the best chance of reaching their potential and, overall, boosts their confidence and academic performance. When students realize they are learning and can apply what they learn properly, their grades improve, and they become eager to continue learning.
What level of education does Al-Ayn support?
We support primary and secondary aged children. Many of our children, when they grow up, want to work in fields like medicine, finance, engineering and law. We don’t want to deny them that opportunity. We aim to cover the tuition fees for any student who wants to pursue a university degree and provide financial incentives that encourage students to maintain their performance.
Al-Ayn’s vocational training program
Our vocational training program helps orphaned children transition into adulthood and become more independent. Some of the workshops that are running today include hairdressing, mobile repairs, sewing, IT skills, catering and many more! The participants are then presented with a graduation certificate before they successfully transition into employment.
Our vocational training sessions cover technical and soft skills.
In addition to learning their desired trade, they will also learn beneficial skills that help in any walk of life, such as time management, customer service, and entrepreneurship. Many students who graduate from our vocational program start their own businesses. To help them get started, we provide them with a microfinance loan. In addition to the loan, every student is assigned a buddy who mentors the student as they learn to start and run a business.
Mustafa’s barber shop
Mustafa is one of the hundreds of students who have graduated from the vocational training program. Mustafa has an interest in hairstyling. Thanks to your support, we facilitated his training, and he now runs his own business while continuing his core education.
Mustafa says:
“Before getting registered with Al-Ayn, I had to leave school and work in a clothes shop. After joining the Luminous Stars Center and graduating from the barbering course, I have my own shop now! But even better – I’m now back in secondary school, catching up on my studies. My life has really taken a positive turn.”
Through your donations, we can help more students graduate from our educational and vocational training programs.
While one-off donations are highly appreciated, a recurring donation of any amount allows us to consistently enroll students into our program. This avoids any unnecessary disruptions to their curriculum.
By addressing educational needs holistically, we are not just teaching; we are nurturing future leaders and innovators who will one day contribute to the rebuilding of their communities.
Your support can help continue this legacy of change.
Join us in our mission to help every orphaned child meet and exceed their potential by providing them with the education they deserve.
